FULLCOUNT Denim Shirts: Inspired by the Past, Made for Today

At FULLCOUNT, we approach every garment with the same dedication to quality and craftsmanship that defines our jeans. This time, we turn our attention to our denim shirts, a year-round staple in our collection.

From work shirts to Western shirts, we will explore the fabrics and construction techniques that set each style apart, along with their One Wash and vintage-finished versions. More than simply recreating the past, FULLCOUNT brings the spirit of vintage clothing into the present, creating denim shirts designed for the way we dress today.

Stitching with the Precision of a Dress Shirt

Denim shirts are often associated with rugged construction and casual workwear. At FULLCOUNT, however, we take a slightly different approach.

This philosophy is most evident in our stitching. Both our work shirts and Western shirts feature a high stitch density, requiring additional time and care during construction. This meticulous approach not only enhances strength and durability but also helps prevent the garment from losing its shape, resulting in a better fit and cleaner lines.

We also employ a narrow seam construction technique known as makikan-nui, in which the fabric edges are rolled and enclosed within the seam. This method provides additional strength and flexibility while creating the distinctive puckering that gives denim its character.

Denim shirts may have their roots in workwear, but ours are constructed with a level of precision more commonly associated with dress shirts. This is what sets FULLCOUNT denim shirts apart from conventional workwear.

Bringing the Functionality of the Past into Modern Design

Like our jeans, FULLCOUNT denim shirts are made from Zimbabwe cotton. However, rather than simply applying the same approach used for our denim jeans, we developed a fabric inspired by the denim traditionally used in military garments.

A closer study of vintage denim shirts reveals an interesting detail: gray and khaki-toned yarns were often incorporated into the weft to help conceal dirt and stains.

Following this approach, FULLCOUNT uses similarly toned weft yarns in its denim fabric. The result is a distinctive, slightly smoky fade rather than the cleaner, almost white fading often associated with indigo denim.

What began as a practical solution to conceal dirt has become a defining feature of the fabric's character over time. This is a perfect example of onko chishin—learning from the past to create something new. Rather than simply reproducing vintage garments, we reinterpret the wisdom behind their design and incorporate it into clothing suited to modern style. This philosophy lies at the heart of FULLCOUNT's craftsmanship.

With this in mind, let's take a closer look at our signature denim shirts and the craftsmanship behind them.

4890 Denim Work Shirt

The classic 4890 Denim Work Shirt features a balanced silhouette that is neither too loose nor too slim, similar to our signature 4810 Chambray Shirt.

It is made from 8 oz denim woven from 100% Zimbabwe cotton, with gray weft yarns that create its characteristic smoky fading over time. High-quality sewing thread and fine, precise stitching ensure a carefully finished garment built to last.

As the shirt ages, the fabric develops a subtle, smoky patina. The plated brass buttons also take on their own character with wear, adding another layer of individuality to the shirt.

4890HW Denim Work Shirt — Vintage Finish

The 4890HW is the vintage-finished version of the 4890.

Its moderately faded indigo tone sits between a fresh, dark denim and a heavily worn piece, making it an ideal starting point for developing your own fades through continued wear. Small, scattered white marks resembling paint splashes are created through a bleach treatment, adding subtle visual interest to the fabric.

The vintage finish also brings out the puckering along the seams from the very beginning, allowing you to appreciate the character of the stitching from the moment you put it on.

Rather than directly replicating vintage Western shirt silhouettes, FULLCOUNT has developed its own patterns to suit contemporary styling. Through repeated refinements, we have carefully perfected the cut and proportions, with particular attention to the balance between body length, chest width, and shoulder width.

The result is a clean, well-balanced silhouette with the refinement of a dress shirt.

Like our work shirts, the 4894 is made from 8 oz denim woven from 100% Zimbabwe cotton, with gray weft yarns that produce a distinctive smoky fade over time. We have also carefully refined the stitching to bring out pronounced puckering along the seams.

Pearl buttons complete the Western-inspired design, adding a classic detail to the shirt.

The 4894HW is the vintage-finished version of the 4894.

Its appearance is carefully created through a finishing process that recreates the character and fading of a shirt worn and aged over many years. The result is a naturally weathered look that feels as though it has a long history behind it.

The quality of the construction plays an essential role in bringing out the pronounced puckering along the seams, giving the finished shirt depth and character.

Because the One Wash version takes time to develop similar fading through regular wear, the 4894HW is an excellent choice for those who want to enjoy this well-worn aesthetic from the outset.

A Denim Shirt That Gets Better with Time

For many FULLCOUNT denim shirts, the best is yet to come when you first take them out of the box.

We pay meticulous attention to every aspect of the fabric and construction, with the intention of creating garments that reveal their beauty gradually as they are worn and aged. Each crease, fade, and change in texture becomes part of the shirt's individual character.

Just like our jeans, a FULLCOUNT denim shirt is designed to be a long-term companion—one that grows with you and becomes more personal over time.
