In this article, we explore the history of Brown’s Beach, the distinctive appeal of its signature fabric, and the collection of Brown’s Beach garments produced by FULLCOUNT.
A HARDWEARING HERITAGE FAVORED BY FISHERMEN, OUTDOORSMEN, AND ANTARCTIC EXPLORERS

Brown’s Beach originated with the Brown’s Beach Jacket Company, founded in 1898 by William W. Brown in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. The brand’s signature garments were introduced in 1901.
More than 125 years ago, the company developed a distinctive fabric known as Beach Cloth, recognized for its characteristic salt-and-pepper appearance and textured surface.
Beach Cloth features a two-layer construction, combining a cotton Russell-knit outer face with a wool fleece backing. Although its structure is similar to that of sweatshirt fabric, wool fleece accounts for more than 70% of the material and is heavily brushed, giving the fabric exceptional durability rarely associated with knitwear.
Thanks to its outstanding warmth and functionality, Brown’s Beach garments became popular among workers who faced harsh conditions, including fishermen, hunters, and lumberjacks, as well as outdoor enthusiasts.
As mail-order catalog businesses became established in the United States during the 1920s and 1930s, the brand's reputation spread from the East Coast across the country.
In the 1930s, Brown’s Beach jackets and vests were also supplied to the Second Byrd Antarctic Expedition, led by renowned American polar explorer Richard E. Byrd. This remarkable episode illustrates the brand’s reputation for producing protective clothing capable of withstanding extreme environments.
A BRAND THAT DISAPPEARED, THEN FOUND NEW LIFE IN THE VINTAGE SCENE

By the 1950s, Brown’s Beach had become widely recognized for its comfort and was even a popular choice as a gift for grandfathers. Meanwhile, new materials and technologies were beginning to transform the market for cold-weather clothing.
In the 1960s, lightweight synthetic materials such as polyester emerged in outdoor apparel, while fashion preferences underwent significant changes. As the industry evolved, Brown’s Beach eventually ceased production.
In recent years, however, vintage enthusiasts have rediscovered the appeal of American workwear from the 1920s and 1930s. As interest in heritage brands that disappeared after the 1960s has grown, original Brown’s Beach garments have also become highly sought-after vintage pieces.

FULLCOUNT ACQUIRED THE OFFICIAL LICENSE IN 2010

With its distinctive texture and timeless character, Beach Cloth pairs naturally with denim and classic American casual styles. Its appeal also made it a natural match for FULLCOUNT denim.
Recognizing this compatibility, FULLCOUNT began extensive research into Brown’s Beach fabric in the autumn of 2007. In February 2010, we acquired the official license (REGISTRATION NUMBER: 5344091) and began production.
The Beach Cloth used in FULLCOUNT’s Brown’s Beach collection has a composition of 74% wool and 26% cotton. Variations in the characteristic salt-and-pepper pattern give each piece its own distinctive appearance.

Brown’s Beach fabric has a substantial, dense feel comparable to melton wool. Unlike denim, wool fabric does not typically display fading in the same way over time. Instead, with continued wear, the fabric gradually softens and molds to the wearer, developing a rich character that can rival the appearance of vintage originals.
Like a well-worn pair of jeans, Brown’s Beach garments become more appealing with age.
At FULLCOUNT, we apply the same dedication and attention to detail that define our denim to every Brown’s Beach piece, creating garments designed to be worn and appreciated for years to come.
