A Different Shade of Black: FULLCOUNT Black Denim

Easy to pair with monochrome outfits and highly versatile when it comes to coordinating with different colors, black denim has become a staple in modern wardrobes.

FULLCOUNT has been producing black denim as part of its core collection for many years, and it continues to be a consistently popular choice. While FULLCOUNT is perhaps best known for its indigo denim, we put just as much thought and care into our black denim.

This time, we take a closer look at what makes FULLCOUNT black denim a little different.

Sulfur-Dyed with Rope-Dyed Yarn, Just Like Our Indigo Denim

FULLCOUNT's indigo denim is made using rope-dyed warp yarn. With rope dyeing, several hundred individual yarns are bundled together into a rope-like form, briefly immersed in a dye bath, exposed to air to oxidize, and then dipped again. This process is repeated several times.

Although this method is more time-consuming than uniform dyeing or sheet-form slasher dyeing, rope dyeing allows the surface of the yarn to absorb the dye while leaving a lighter, undyed core.

When woven into denim, this creates the kind of three-dimensional fading and vintage character that develops beautifully with wear.

Combined with the use of vintage-style shuttle looms, this yarn construction is one of the key elements behind the distinctive fading of FULLCOUNT denim.

For black denim, reactive dyeing is more commonly used for the warp yarn than the rope-dyeing method used for indigo denim.

Reactive dyeing is relatively economical and produces a deep, even color. However, because the dye penetrates all the way into the core of the yarn, it takes longer for the color to fade. As a result, achieving the characteristic vintage-style fading associated with denim can be more difficult.

At FULLCOUNT, we deliberately take the more time-consuming approach of using sulfur-dyed, rope-dyed yarn for our black denim—the same basic dyeing approach used for our indigo denim.

Black dye fades more slowly than indigo, but as the jeans are worn over time, the black gradually softens and fades, creating subtle contrasts and a unique character of its own.

The FULLCOUNT Black Denim Lineup

FULLCOUNT offers two types of black selvedge denim.

The first is our 13.7oz Original Selvedge Black Denim, made from Zimbabwe cotton. The second is our lighter-weight 11.5oz Original Selvedge Denim = Super Smooth, also made from Zimbabwe cotton and popular across our indigo denim collection.

The 13.7oz black denim is available in the following models:

0105 / 1101 / 1108 / 2107 / 2102
HW : 0105 / 1101 / 1108 / 2107 / 2102

The 11.5oz black denim is available in:

0105 / 1101 / 1103 / 1108 / 2107 / 2102
HW : 0105 / 1101 / 1103 / 1108 / 2107 / 2102

2102 is a denim jacket created in collaboration with HTC.

The construction is exactly the same as our standard indigo denim. Different thread weights, from heavier to finer counts, are carefully selected according to the function and location of each seam, and every garment is sewn with the same attention to detail.

The color may be different, but the quality and construction expected of FULLCOUNT's core denim remain unchanged.

Vintage-Finished Dartford, and the Details Unique to Black Denim

Black denim takes longer to develop fades than indigo, but that slower process is part of the appeal. Starting with a One Wash finish, you can gradually wear the jeans in and develop a character that is uniquely your own.

For those who want to enjoy the look of years of wear from the beginning, there is another option: Dartford, our vintage-finished denim.

Like the Dartford models in our indigo collection, the black denim version incorporates pronounced whiskers and fading inspired by years of natural wear. It allows you to enjoy the character and texture of faded denim from the moment you put it on.

FULLCOUNT black denim also features hardware selected specifically to complement the black denim, rather than using exactly the same hardware as our indigo denim series.

Brown-toned buttons and darker, blackened rivets are combined with the denim to create details that naturally complement its deeper color.

Whether you choose the gradual evolution of One Wash or the already-developed character of Dartford, the comfortable wearing experience that FULLCOUNT considers essential to denim remains unchanged in our black denim.
